In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, the Younger family is awaiting a life insurance check and is unsure how to use it. At the time the Younger family was going through serious financial difficulties, and they were living in a poor area of Chicago in the 1950’s. Not only does the whole family want to get out but they each have their own ideas of how they should get out using the check. Walter Jr., on one hand, is a nine-to-five general business worker, a cab driver for the rich people of Chicago, who thinks the money would be best used to get into the liquor store business with his friends Wille Harris and Bobo. On the other hand, his sister Beneatha believes that a good portion of the money should be put away for herself to go to medical school. Overall, Beneatha’s plan could help the family, but they need the money without delay. Therefore, Walter Jr. has a better plan on how to get out of poverty because it will benefit the whole family in a short time.
